• What is the purpose of the isolation switch and is it necessary? Also why does it need to be within 1 metre of the rails? Can the transformer be installed sub floor (where I have easy access if necessary)

The isolation transformer can be installed subfloor, provided that insulation is removed to a 300mm radius and also assuming that the transformer will be accessible for replacement in the future. DCS recommend that the isolation switch be within 1 metre of the towel rail so that the switch is easily identified with the   appliance. There must be a switch for the towel rail somewhere to switch it off in the event of a fault. Every towel rail is supplied with a timer that is also controlled by the switch. The switch for low voltage towel rails, such as the Vega, is typically a separate switch mechanism on the light switch plate for the whole bathroom (clearly marked). For example you may have lights, extractor, towel rail and heating on the same switch plate. Although this is common practice, and safe, we still recommend that the switch for the towel rail be a separate switch plate located close to the rail itself. The installation instructions mention both scenarios.

    • Does the concealed cable kit allow the cable to be fully hidden? ie I do not need to install another power point outside for the power plug?

Yes most definitely the concealed cable kit (CCK) allows the power cable to exit through the leg into the wall and the wiring is completed behind the wall.

    • Are the Corto towel rails able to be installed with one overlapping the other?

Yes definitely and this is a function unique to the Corto. We offer the Corto towel rails with 2 different leg depths which allows you to create a unique arrangement and something that is not only functional but a piece of artwork in your bathroom.

    • Is it possible to get a floor mounted towel rail that is wider than your standard Cava Dua model?

Yes we can manufacture a wider version and have previously made one with a width of 1600mm which looked very impressive once it was installed.

    • Do the Vega towel rails come in a brushed matte finish or just chrome?

All of our stainless steel towel rails are available in mirror polish finish or satin brushed which is a matte finish.

    • Can the 3 Scarpa 12volt rails be connected to a switch and then manually turned on and off as required not using the timer?

Yes all our towel rails can be operated without the Ecotimer. The downside with switching the towel rails on manually is that it takes approx 30min for the towel rails to get up to operating temperature and longer for the towels to warm up. The advantage of the Ecotimer is that the user can select the operation time so when they need to use a towel it has already had time to warm up and dry out.

    • I am looking to get a custom made rail from your company how do I go about that?

We can manufacture custom towel rails to customers specifications by either the customer or architect submitting a drawing to a bathroom retailer who then deals with us and we can provide a quote OR you can use our new “Design Your Own page” feature which is on our website which produces a technical drawing of the towel rail. See www.dcshort.com/custom/index.htm

    • When using the custom made rail from floor to ceiling, how far should the rail be located from the wall?

We recommend the rail to be placed at a minimum of 50mm from the surface of the upright tube to the wall. This would give a distance of 75mm from the wall to the centre of the towel rail.

    • Does the Siroco model towel rail wiring come in left or right?

All of our towel rails are available in left or right wiring configurations.

    • I have read your Ecotimer instructions but am unclear on how you get the heated towel rail to come on at a specific time. We want our towel rails to come on for 5 hours from 4am and 4pm. I understand that I wait for five beeps when setting the Ecotimer but how do I program it so that it comes on a these desired times?

To set the Ecotimer at the desired times you would do the switching setup process (for 5 hour setting) at 4pm which would then activate the towel rail immediately and stay on for the 1st ON period for 5 hours. At 4am the towel rail would come on again for 5 hours.

    • Lived in Sydney for many years – now back in the US would like to install some Siroco Rails. Would you ship to NYC… what is the Transformer rating – as I would have to replace it with   110V input version. Thanks….

Yes we can send product to NYC and currently we are working to towards providing product to the west coast of America. In regards to the transformer we have UL approved 110V transformers readily available. Please contact our sales team for a quote or more information.

    • Hi do you have a 12 volt towel rail or ladder available, suitable for over a bath?

Yes we have many 12 volt rails that are suitable for your application. Any of our modular, or lava rails would be ideal or if you prefer a ladder rail we can wire them for 12 volt also.

    • Is the En-Suite Oz reversible ie. can it be mounted with the concealed mounting kit bottom left or reversed at top right. The outlet on the unit we have purchased is at bottom left.

The short answer is yes although after installation the small fastening screws in the legs will be visible by mounting the rail upside down.

    • Can the towel rails be used without the heating & can the single ones be lined up differently instead of underneath each other?

Yes all our towel rails can be offered unheated and our modular rails can be arranged in any configuration as unheated.

    • I am designing a bathroom including the Vega Heated Towel Rails. Can I locate them on the wall at the opposite end to the shower head in a 1740mm long shower bay? Is there a minimum distance from the shower head to the heated towel rails?

You will need to talk to your electrician regarding the safe locations to install towel rails as somebody needs to physically look at your situation. We recommend that all our towel rails be installed no closer than Zone 2. However, if there is no alternative, our Siroco and Scarpa low voltage rails can be installed in Zone 1 safely. The Vega rails will be tested in the near future for installation in Zone 1.

    • CAN LADDER RAILS BE WIRED FOR 12V AND DO THEY PROVIDE THE SAME HEAT AS MAINS POWERED?

Yes we can manufacture most of our ladder rail range in low voltage and they produce the same heat output as a mains powered rail.

    • HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO RUN A TOWEL RAIL PER YEAR? (ANY BRAND)

Based on a conservative estimate of $1.50 per watt, per year, a 100watt towel rail would cost approximately $150 per year to run if left on constantly. DCS towel rails are supplied with an Ecotimer as standard. If the timer is used to run the towel rail for only 8 hours out of 24, the saving per annum would be approximately $100 (based on scenario above).

    • ARE THE TOWEL RAILS THERMOSTATICALLY CONTROLLED?

No, the towel rails are designed to reach a temperature under towels of approximately 55 degrees Celsius. The surface temperature of the towel rails will vary on the number of towels on the rail, the ambient air temperature, and the dampness of the towels.

    • CAN THE ISOLATION SWITCH FOR THE TOWEL RAIL BE NEXT TO THE LIGHT SWITCH?

It is recommended that an isolation switch for the towel rail be placed within 1 metre of the appliance. Placing the switch further away will depend on the particular situation, but is possible. A DCS ‘concealed cable accessory kit’ may be required. Consultation with the electrician early in the project would be essential.

    • WHERE IS THE TRANSFORMER INSTALLED FOR MODULAR TOWEL RAILS?

Modular towel rail transformers are normally installed behind the switch plate or directly above the towel rail location in the ceiling cavity. See the Installation Instructions section for more details.

    • CAN THE TOWEL RAILS BE POLISHED?

Yes the towel rails can be polished with metal polish pastes such as ‘Brasso’ and ‘Autosol’.

    • HOW FAR APART SHOULD MODULAR RAILS BE PLACED?

The recommended vertical spacing is 240mm. The customer can vary this dimension, provided that the rail farthest from the transformer is within two metres of the transformer.

    • CAN TOWEL RAILS BE INSTALLED ABOVE A BATH OR BASIN?

No, is the safe answer for almost all heated towel rails that are mains powered 230V. However, DCS do manufacture seven 12V heated towel rails that can be installed safely in this location provided the electrician is fully consulted early in the project. Refer to the products section for all 12 volt models.

    • ARE DCS TOWEL RAILS LIQUID FILLED?

No, DCS towel rails are dry internally. Dry towel rails heat up faster, do not leak, do not require plumbing and have a very long life heating element.

    • WHAT IS THE WARRANTY ON DCS TOWEL RAILS?

7 years warranty for faults in materials and assembly, 3 years on electrical components.

    • IS STAINLESS STEEL BETTER THAN CHROME PLATED MILD STEEL?

Yes, stainless steel is an inherently corrosion resistant material whereas chrome plated mild steel relies on the integrity of a plated finish (about 1/3 the thickness of a human hair) to prevent corrosion.

    • ARE DCS TOWEL RAILS CHROME PLATED?

No, all DCS towel rails and solid stainles steel and are available in a mirror finish (chrome appearance) or satin finish (brushed appearance).
